The Scream El Grito. Antonio Montes Nuevos Tiempos. 184.
THE BOOK
The story begins on a Saturday in April in a small village in the south of Spain. A scream draws the attention of all the inhabitants of a house announcing the death of an old woman. During the following hours, the doors of the house will be wide open for the funeral wake: for talks and gossips, family members and neighbours, tears and reencounters, flowers and prayers... and people, a lot of people. A reflection of the village people’s lives, inevitably linked, for better or for worse. At the same time, Carlos and Luis, the old woman’s grandchildren, try to put up with this invasion to their intimacy which threatens to reveal their secret the best they can. This is a story about little tragedies and joys of ordinary life, without heroes or villains. This story brilliantly combines black humour with moments of touching tenderness. IN BRIEF
